History Of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a monumental contribution of India to the world. As the name implies, Ayurveda (Ayuh: life, Veda: knowledge) is an organized body of knowledge of healthy living. Systematized knowledge is science, and it is an expression of human creativity.
Since creativity has diverse expressions, science is a multifaceted enterprise, which refers to different ways of knowing. The term science need not be confined to modern Western definitions where it is bound by institutionalized rules.
This realization about the vast conceptual framework of science is essential for understanding Ayurveda, which represents a well-codified system of human care and reflects the art and science of health and healing.
Ayurveda focuses more on the function and dysfunction of the human body, rather than philosophy after a certain stage. The orderly upkeep of the body is considered the prime requisite to achieve human aspirations and life goals.
It is a system of medicine built on an unchanging philosophical foundation, yet dynamic at the operational level. The flexibility of Ayurveda allows it to adapt to the changing trends and needs of human life.
In short, Ayurveda has a unique self-designed axiomatic framework that presents a global vision. It assumes a fundamental continuity between all elements of the universe, perceiving man as an integral part of nature. Ayurveda highlights the commonalities between man and nature and seeks to explain human life in its totality.
The human body is composed of five basic elements known as Panchabhutas — earth, water, fire, wind, and space. Each element influences specific parts and functions of the human constitution.
For example, space governs bodily openings like the ears and internal voids; fire influences form, glow, vision, body heat, digestion, anger, and valour. Recognizing this elemental connection between the human body and the external world is fundamental to the npractice of Ayurveda.
Diseases are seen as imbalances in body constituents (doshas). These perturbations occur when there is an increase or decrease in any body element.
